What Are Some Of Your Biggest Pet Peeves Concerning Horses And Horse Care?
All right- we all have pet peeves when it comes to our 4 legged equine friends and how they are cared for, not to mention about those who are doing the caring. i 'm inviting people to share some of their biggest ones. it 's a slow day around here, and i want to liven things up a bit. just for giggles, i will share a couple pet peeves of my own. 1. safety. this includes following safe practices at all times around horses, whether on the ground, mounted, in the barn, or wherever. it also includes being responsible and proactive instead of reactive. being safe to me means i wear my helmet, every time i ride, just like i buckle up in the car before i go anywhere. it means i take the extra few seconds to think before i act when i am around horses. it means i put tools and equipment back where i got them when i am done. it means i lead horses correctly, and i don 't do dangerous things like loop a stud shank through the lower ring on a horse 's halter and hook it back on itself. it means i am aware of what is around me at all times. i could go on forever with this, but you get the idea. 2.helmet usage by all riders, regardless of age, discipline, experience, or skill level. this includes helmet use by dressage riders and western riders. rider safety is not a choice- it is, and should be a requirement. helmet use needs to be mandatory, period, because helmets save lives. if people at the racetrack wear helmets all the time, why is it so tough for ordinary horse people to do this too? i 've never heard of anyone at the tracks griping about the helmet requirement- it 's just an accepted part of the landscape there. why is it that people in other sports have a hissy fit when it comes to protecting their own safety? do they really have that much of a death wish? like i said, these are just two of my personal pet peeves. feel free to add your own, but keep the discussion reasonably civil, okay? add- horses and horse sports are dangerous enough without borrowing more trouble. most of the people ( whether celebrities or not) who 've been badly hurt or even killed by horses and horse sports in recent decades have gotten into trouble mainly because they either refused to follow the basic safety rules or because they wouldn 't take "no " for an answer when they were told not to do something. the late actor christopher reeve is a prime example of someone who was in the latter category- and it ultimately got him killed. there have tragically been a lot of other examples, too. reeve may have been wearing a helmet and a body protector, yes, but that doesn 't take away from the fact that he wouldn 't take no for an answer the day of the accident. he was riding a horse that had a bad reputation for stopping. do you know what a "stop " is? it 's a violent, planned refusal which is intended to unseat or throw the rider- and eastern express, reeve 's horse, was notorious for this kind of violent behavior. now, any rider can have a stop- even members of our olympic team have occasionally had problems with horses that stopped on course. but the difference between these people ( who are professionals that have tons of saddle hours behind them) and a weekend amateur like reeve is that the olympic caliber riders normally can handle such behavior without risk to either themselves or their horses- in other words, they are experts at getting themselves out of trouble and out of dangerous situations. reeve wasn 't, and he never could have been, because riding was his hobby, not (Read answers)

Winter Horse Care, Advice And Tips?
We (the bo and i) had to call a barn meeting because of some shortcomings in the standard of care. for the first time ever the bo took on a boarder, and with the boarder came friends who ride the bo 's horse. no problem, but the boarder is a first time horse owner, and a 14 year old girl. none of her friends have ever cared for horses either, they have all taken riding lessons, but have no practical experience in horse care. they are on rough board, they groom, muck, do everything on their own. i am the bo 's 'trainer ' and head groom.the girls really don 't cool out the horses after riding, they tend to do a lot of riding, and the horses don 't get cooled out, especially the bo 's mare. in the winter having wet, sweaty horses is not a good game plan. we will be leaving rags around to dry the horses with.the mucking done is mediocre, and not up to standard ever, they do the bare minimum and then ride. the rule is that if you want to ride, you have to muck. they know how to muck properly, but they are lazy and want to ride. they also have asked to get out of barn chores so they can do something else. like shopping or going to see a movie. getting sick is one thing, but skipping out due to laziness is another. their parents do little to help this, especially the boarder 's parents.we are working on getting a proper feeding schedule worked out, sometimes they fail to show without warning so the horses don 't get fed. which is not okay. we are devising a list of who to call and when for feeding and barn chores. they also fail to check water. horses need water in the winter too.hoof care in winter is falling short, they don 't groom or pick hooves unless they ride. i do know that grooming in winter should be reduced, but they shouldn 't stop completely. and hooves have to be cared for no matter what. what are your best tips and tricks for winter horse care in general? is there something you do differently in winter? how about riding outdoors in winter? general advise would be much appreciated.i live in massachusetts, in the us. moving isn 't really an option. lolazeri, i totally agree with you. but the summer is wonderful here isn 't it? luckily the bo could ban riding but still make them come to take care of the horses. i have a lot of power at the barn, thank goodness, but i myself can 't place bans. Can Some One Help Me About Horse Care?
In the future im planning on getting a horse but first i want to learn so i have asked an old friend to teach me as she owns horses but to be honest i don 't think shes taking care of them from what i have been reading online but shes saying to ignore what i read because half of it your horse don 't need. she only shoes her horses front feet and told me i could do the same... is she right? i read online it depends what your using her horse for and the condition of its hooves? im only planning on riding it for pleasure. she also said she has different shoes not normal ones but i can 't remember the name. feed - she told me she pays £25 for hay which lasts her 2 months (she has 3 horses) she said others pay a lot more because they are fussy and want their horse to have the best but doesnt need it???she never grooms them, maybe once a week but i read everyday you should groom them because the dirt could cause soars?can people list what is a must for horses throughout the year because i want to take care of my horse not just let it rot and me ride it.i don 't want to know about stables, tack etc i mean health care like teeth? shoeing? worming? how often and what is a "must " (Read answers)

Beginner Horse Care.?
I love horses, always have, and would like my own. i need some help. actually i need a lot of help. = )i 've never owned a horse before so i am starting completely from scratch. growing up, my best friend had about 5 horses and we rode them and i helped her out every once in awhile. i also took about 8 general care/ riding lessons in college. needless to say i 'm not really prepared. but i have always loved them and begged my friend to take me with her to take care of them. i realize they are a lot of work, but it would be so worth it. don 't worry, i 'm not jumping into this. i 'm currently in college and have about 10-15 yrs before i could even try to get a horse, i 'm just looking into it now for future financial plans and for my future husband who is curious.i would need a few lessons (before i got the horse) to say the least, and i 'd have to some how learn all the terms and how to care for them. would they teach me this at a stable?what are the benefits to boarding vs keeping it urself?how would i go about looking for one when i am ready to buy? since im a beginner, and don 't know much at the moment, i wouldn 't even know what to look for. i really like paint and quarter horses from the ones i have met. but what would u suggest? what is the most laid back horse? should i get one that is already trained? how old? how tall? ect.thanks (Read answers)

Money, Time, And Horse Care... What Would You Do?
Warning: lots of text lol.i desperately want my own horse. i take weekly lessons and am going to start leasing soon... but leasing just doesn 't seem as fulfilling as owning your own horse. i simply love being around them, and horses are the only thing i look forward to. it 's gotten to the point where i volunteer to muck out a friend 's stalls. at least i get to spend a few times with horses and out of the bustle of daily life...i have the experience to care for horses on the ground no problem. i 'd consider myself an advanced beginner in the saddle; i can walk, trot, canter, hack out on my own, and do round pen work or lunge. what 's holding me back from getting my own horse is a few things...one is money. i have enough money to purchase a horse and all it 's equipment and have enough to pay for board. but i am in no way rich and know lots of people who own horses are not rich. i could dedicate $500 a month to a horse, about only $250-300 after board... not sure if that is too little to be safe.then there is time. i know many people who only ride on the weekends and in many cases (when full boarding), i will be one of those people. sure, i can visit my horses several times a week. groom, clean, pick hooves... but i probably only can ride thursdays, saturday, and sunday. i 'm not sure if that 's enough...and the last thing is showing. i ride both english and western, but take lessons in dressage. i doubt i 'll be a serious shower though... i have fun just hacking around. my mother thinks i should wait until i know for sure what i want to do. but i kind of just want an all around pleasure horse. but i think my trainer would be upset if i spent so much time learning dressage only to get a horse who 's not really trained to do any discipline... if you were in my shoes... what would you do? a part of me wants to wait; save money for a nice horse and be sure if i want to get into showing. but the other part of me just wants to settle for a bombproof trail horse/ pony. advice? opinions? Part Time Horse Care - This Horse?
Hey. i have no experience of owning a horse but am now looking to "rent " a horse for 3+ days a week, including all the care of owning a horse those days. not sure what this is called in english. the mare that i have looked at is here: blocket.se/ goteborg/ l_aquila_soker_fodervard_33868004.htm?ca= 15 &w= 1 &last= 1 i know there is no conformity image or anything, but i thought her body looked a bit odd. i 'm inexperienced though, so would like any comments that can be given on these images before i visit her. thanks!would like to mention that i am no beginner, i have had horses in my live for about 12 years (9 of actually taking classes etc) so i can ride, just inexperienced with the caring part!@ jumanji: thank you for your reply! i am familiar with "basic " grooming/ mucking etc, just not the feeding/ searching (for injuries) part but i suppose that is easily brought into my routine. as for your analysis of the picture... it 's essentially what i thought, with the bloated stomach and back legs and heavy head/ front. i hope it 's just the pictures however!@ "? " - with all due respect, if you had a look at the link you will realise that i am not a native english speaker and therefore not familiar with the equestrian terms in english :) i have ridden for 9 years (again, as mentioned) and now would like to actually care for a horse in order to develop my knowledge overall. i 'm familiar with the term "conformation " since it often shows up around here on yahoo answers, and that a lot of elitists whine about it not being a conformation image when op ask them to judge it.? being prodi gium, seems yahoo didn 't load up.@ prodi gium: i suppose since this is no forum i ought to stop replying, but since there isn 't quite a clear message in my op i 'll just be a little more elaborate.i have never had the fortune to live with horses other than the 1-2 trip to the club to take my riding classes. i have cared for horses, but that rarely allows you to take care of their feeding routine (or letting them out for that part, either). it has never been economically viable for us to own a horse until leasing became relevant now that i am an adult, pretty much, and since i know the amount of riding/ equine knowledge (?) that most riding clubs teach.i have done feeding, i know how to feed a horse - at the end of the day it 's a routine easily learnt and it 's usually different depending on the horse - but i am just saying that i am not experienced on the levels of being a horse owner myself. same goes for checking illness symptoms/ examining: i know how to do it, i am aware of the symptoms of the more... common conditions but i have never experienced it first hand since those horses are usually taken out from the rest of the schooling horses. i have been to riding camps where you pretty much care for a horse with surveillance, i have helped friends who leased horses etc. i know my op came across as extremely ignorant/ cna i ples hav hors- kind of, but i do have more than a few braincells and i know how to act around horses - i am just humble and aware that i have a lot to learn since my progress has been slow due to the circumstances and the idea that i probably could not get further, thus just seeing it as a "hobby " as opposed as the lifestyle i would like to choose. What To Know About Older Horse Care?
Well, i 've never owned an older horse before and now that my own boy is getting up in years, i suppose it 's time to look ahead at what 's to come.though my horse isn 't exactly what you 'd call "old " just yet, he is starting to slow down slightly.he 's a 16 year old arabian. like i said, not exactly old, but he 's no spring chicken. i was just wondering what i can expect for the road ahead. is there anything specific i should look out for? any differences i need to make in his care now or in the near future?i understand that the teeth and digestive system go downhill from here, but when does it typically become a problem? what about riding, back problems, disease susceptibility (now and later), ect?and websites that may be out there are fantastic as well- i couldn 't really find anything useful.i don 't know if dealing with an older horse is really much different than any other horse unless they have some significant health issue, but i just want to make sure. this is my first horse and i got him when he was 9, so i 'm still learning as i go. :) thanks!when i say he 's slowing down, i don 't mean anything dramatic. he 's still pretty spunky and wild physically, but he 's calmed down a lot mentally. he used to be super spooky and skittish when i got him, but now he 's not as phased by things.to be honest, i don 't know if this sudden calmness could be an age thing or just him coming a long way from where he was. i 'd like to think it 's the latter, but what do you think?thanks for all the answers so far!
